Primary Questions and Prompts
Margaret Jeffcoat, Margaret Jones, Jill Mansergh, John Mason, Heather Sewell, Anne Watson

This booklet is centred around a grid of ‘mathematical structures’ and ‘processes’ associated with mathematical thinking and reasoning which was devised by Anne Watson and John Mason. The grid serves as a framework for the analysis and identification of questions and prompts for use in teaching. With the aim of providing inspiration rather than recipes or menus, a series of general question types is presented which is then illustrated by a collection of specific examples across content areas.

A booklet to help primary practitioners to plan their teaching interactions, broaden their repertoire of question types and explore how their pupils develop the ability to think mathematically.
