Mathematics curriculum is certainly an international ‘hot topic’ at the moment. Australia is not the only country having a very close look at issues for curriculum design, development and implementation. The NCTM’s 72nd Yearbook looks at the advancements that have been made in K-12 mathematics curriculum development, as well as the challenges regarding curriculum that need to be addressed. Whilst the articles reflect particular experience and aspirations in the USA, the themes and issues are very applicable in this country.

The chapters in the yearbook are organised into sections that cover areas such as visions for curriculum; the ‘intended’, ‘written’ and ‘implemented’ curriculum; selection of textbooks; and the impact of curriculum materials on students’ and teachers’ learning. Quoting from the book’s dust-jacket:

“Although times change, society changes, and people change, for many it is difficult to accept change in the mathematics curriculum. This Yearbook is intended to stimulate discussions about the mathematics curriculum and support continued reflection and work to improve mathematics learning opportunities for all students.”

We are in a time of significant change in mathematics curriculum in this country. This book will inform teachers and other mathematics educators as active and constructive participants in those discussions and developments.
