Making number talks matter

A number talk is a brief daily practice where students mentally solve computation problems and talk about their strategies. The talks help students to work flexibly with numbers and arithmetic properties, building a solid foundation and confident disposition for future learning.

Mary has been teaching since 1976, initially in secondary schools, and since 1990 at the University of Technology, Sydney where she currently teaches first year engineering and science students, and is also the director of the Mathematics Study Centre which supports students from all faculties.

Mary has also been active on many committees of the NSW Board of Studies, including setting and marking Higher School Certificate examinations and revising syllabuses.

Mary is a Life Member and Past President of the Mathematical Association of New South Wales.
